Exploring Transitions

Located inside Ha.aH art space, our residency programs offer artists an opportunity to participate in a collective exhibition exploring the theme of “Transitions” through their work or research.

This program invites artists to reflect on and interpret the multifaceted nature of transitions—whether personal, social, environmental, or cultural. Selected artists will have the chance to develop and present their projects to the local community with the guidance and support of our residency staff and associates.

February 2025

Our goal is to advance the selected artists’ professional development by offering a supportive space for creative exploration of the theme Transitions. Up to 8 artists in residence will present their work in a collective exhibition open to local audiences.

Participants are encouraged to collaborate with local art professionals, propose talks and workshops, and delve into Barcelona’s rich socio-cultural environment.

Guide to the Theme: Transitions in Art

Engaging with the Theme in Residency

During your residency at Ha.aH, you will have the opportunity to explore transitions in your work, collaborate with peers, and reflect on the changing landscapes of Barcelona. This is your chance to investigate the complexities of transformation and create meaningful art that bridges the past and the future.

Exploring Transitions

Transitions are integral to the human experience, reflecting moments of change, growth, or transformation. In art, transitions serve as powerful metaphors and tools for storytelling, enabling artists to capture the essence of shifting realities. This theme encourages artists to delve into the dynamic interplay of past, present, and future, and to explore the ways in which change manifests in personal, social, and environmental contexts.

Key Interpretations of Transitions

  1. Temporal Transitions:
    • Explore the passage of time, from fleeting moments to historical epochs.
    • Reflect on the cyclical nature of life, seasons, and generations.
    • Investigate how memory and nostalgia influence our perception of change.

  2. Cultural and Societal Transitions:
    • Address social movements, revolutions, or shifts in cultural norms.
    • Examine migration, displacement, and the blending of cultural identities.
    • Highlight the impact of globalization and technology on communities and traditions.

  3. Personal and Emotional Transitions:
    • Narrate stories of personal growth, loss, or transformation.
    • Express inner conflicts, identity shifts, or moments of self-discovery.
    • Use autobiographical elements to navigate universal themes.

  4. Environmental and Ecological Transitions:
    • Depict the evolving relationship between humanity and nature.
    • Focus on climate change, urbanization, or natural cycles.
    • Create art that fosters awareness and dialogue about environmental challenges.

Artistic Approaches to Transitions

  • Medium and Materials:
    • Experiment with materials that embody the concept of transition (e.g., biodegradable or time-sensitive media).
    • Combine traditional and contemporary techniques to reflect shifts in artistic practices.

  • Form and Structure:
    • Use gradients, layers, and fragmentation to illustrate gradual or abrupt changes.
    • Incorporate movement, light, or sound to evoke dynamic shifts.

  • Narrative and Concept:
    • Create works that tell stories of transformation, whether linear or non-linear.
    • Engage viewers with participatory or interactive elements that mirror processes of change.

Questions for Reflection

  • What does transition mean to you personally, and how does it resonate with your artistic practice?
  • How can your work capture the tension between continuity and disruption?
  • How do transitions challenge or enrich our understanding of identity, space, or time?
  • In what ways can your art inspire others to reflect on or embrace change?
